Steel Walker® II Magnetic Boots for Steel & Standing-Seam Roofs
Quantity :
Our newest leather magnetic roofing boot delivers a rugged vintage look with ultra-strong, ultra-durable construction built to last. Designed for professional roofers, the Steel Walker® II features a moisture-wicking interior lining that absorbs sweat to help keep feet cool and dry throughout the workday.
For all-day comfort, this roofing boot includes triple-ply cushioning that provides a smooth, supportive ride. Powerful magnets, a softer rubber sole, and an enhanced tread design work together to deliver maximum grip, traction, and confidence on steel surfaces.
Steel Walker® II Features & Options
The Steel Walker® II magnetic boot is available in multiple configurations to match your job requirements:
- Strap Only
- Composition Toe & Strap
Engineered for unsurpassed traction and stability on steel roofing, this boot also offers extended foot protection with a safety-rated composition toe.
How to Get the Strongest Hold
The magnets need full, flat contact with the steel. These habits make the difference:
- Plant your whole foot on the flat pan between ribs. Ribs and seams lift the sole off the panel, so the hold lives between them. Walk deliberately rather than shuffle; most roofers adapt within a few squares.
- Stay off seams, screw heads and other fasteners. Walking on them damages the magnetic sole and can make it unsafe.
- Clean the soles at the ladder and after any cutting or drilling. Metal shards and dropped screws stick to the magnets, cut the contact area and can grind the paint finish. The Magnetic Cleaning Tool lifts them off.
- Wear Cougar Paws Covers on the ground. They protect the soles and keep metal shavings out of the tread between the truck and the ladder.
- Stay off wet, oily or icy panels. Our printed instructions say not to use Cougar Paws on those surfaces. Take care on chalky panels too: the magnets keep holding, but the surface can still slide.
- Magnetic boots are not fall protection. Wear a harness and follow OSHA requirements on every roof.
Important Usage Note
Note: Be sure to use Cougar Paws® Covers with your Steel Walker® II boots while working on the ground. These covers help protect the soles from damage and prevent metal shavings from collecting in the tread.

Will the Steel Walker® II Work on Your Roof?
Yes, if the roof is steel. The sole magnets lock onto carbon steel and galvanized steel, including painted and Galvalume-coated standing-seam and corrugated panels. They will not grip aluminum, copper, zinc or most stainless panels.
To check before you climb, hold the Magnetic Cleaning Tool against the panel. It is the same magnet that is in the boots, so if it sticks firmly, the boots will hold. On shingle, wear one of our shingle roofing boots, such as the Performer; if you split your days between shingle and steel, keep both and switch at the ladder.
FAQ
Clear answers to help you choose the right tool for the job.
Trusted by professionals since 1996
Do these work on standing-seam and corrugated metal roofs?
Yes, built for steel metal roofs including standing-seam and corrugated. Strongest hold on flat, smooth panel areas; on corrugated profiles, plant your foot on the flat pan between ribs for full magnetic contact.
How strong are the magnets and are they safe?
Strong enough for a positive lock on steel roofing while still letting you step naturally. Magnets are not a substitute for fall protection, always wear a harness and follow OSHA requirements.
Can I wear them on shingle, tile, or aluminum/copper roofs?
They are made for steel roofs only. They won't hold on aluminum, copper, zinc or most stainless panels, and they are not for shingle or tile; for shingle work, use a Cougar Paws Shingle Roof Boot such as the Performer.
Do they come with a safety toe?
Choose the Composition Toe & Strap option for a safety toe. Its composition toe meets ASTM F2412-18a and ASTM F2413-18. The other option is Strap Only.
How do I check that my roof is steel?
Use the Magnetic Cleaning Tool that comes with every pair. It is the same magnet that is in the boots, so if it sticks firmly to the panel, your boots will too.
Why does the grip feel weaker on some parts of the roof?
The magnets need flat, full contact with steel. Ribs, seams and metal shards or screws on the soles lift the boot off the panel, so plant your foot on the flat pan and clean the soles with the Magnetic Cleaning Tool.
Will magnetic soles scratch the roof?
Not on their own. The risk is metal shards and dropped screws sticking to the sole and grinding the paint, so clean the soles at the ladder and after any cutting or drilling.
Do the magnets work on a wet roof?
We don't recommend it. Our printed instructions say not to use Cougar Paws on wet, oily or icy surfaces. The magnets keep holding, but wet and frosty panels still slide, because the grip between the rubber and the surface drops.
